I bet that caught some people’s attention.

With the rising cost of food and such, it is a good idea to take the time to go through the papers and make use of coupons in conjunction with sales at various stores. Where you can, buy in bulk and invest in the Reynolds Handi Vac food sealer. I use one and it’s quite good. I buy meats on sale and cook some of it, then freeze the rest for another use later. (I use regular freezer bags if I only intend to use it within a month.)

It’s interesting that we consume 2 to 3 times what we should per meal. I recall seeing an ad from the 50’s showing a portion for a man… being a cheeseburger, as in.. a basic KID cheeseburger, with a small fry and coke. πŸ˜› Try ordering a kid’s meal if you eat out.

Oh yes.. and snack when you’re hungry. (So this is a combo, get your diet on the right track/save money post.) Eat healthy things, have your First Breakfast, Second Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Tea, Dinner and bedtime snacks. Just keep them small and try new things. I particularly enjoy edamame, mmmm… when it’s on sale.

I’ve stopped drinking sodas… pretty much. When you get to the checkout and see the sodas there for $1.25, keep in mind that a 2 liter costs $1.25 πŸ˜€ If you must have a soda, buy a 2 liter and take it home. πŸ˜‰ Better yet, when you LEAVE your home, take a travel cup with you filled with something to drink to lessen your urge to purchase something at the store to drink. It works.

Sonic is doing Happy Hour from 2-4 around here. If you purchase a tea or the light lemonade at a route 44 size, you’re getting 44 ounces for under a dollar. πŸ˜€ And if the ice melts, it doesn’t affect the taste much!

Most importantly.. I’m curious just how many people know HOW to keep fresh foods in a way that they’ll last? I have been learning as I go along, my mother did not teach me where to store such things… to me, if its’ a vegetable, it goes in the drawer marked … vegetable. I just figured out a couple of months ago that you can buy mushrooms and put them in a little more expensive snap tite storage container (I like the ones with colored rims.. I may have to look them up to pass on the info) They’re airtite with valves in the top. Anyway, I discovered some things about mushrooms… don’t WASH them! They soak up water. Wipe them with a clean paper towel. Put a clean paper towel in the bottom of the tupperware container, drop the fresh mushrooms in. Close it. Put it in the vegetable crisper and take out mushrooms when you need them. They last over a month before they start opening! (Always buy tightly closed mushrooms.)

You know… is this kind of stuff interesting to anyone? I’d tossed around the idea of doing research on my own (because there are things I tend to forget and have to look up and this would be a good way to compile data for MYSELF as well.) I know a good number of you are in college or high school and probably don’t know this kind of stuff at all πŸ˜€

In case you’re wondering, I’m experiencing a mind dump after spending 14 hours working on comics yesterday, three today, plus other misc things with no breaks and no active people in the chat… so I need to communicate with someone. πŸ˜€

Some of this is also brought up by a growing awareness of how much food the grocery stores WASTE. It makes me sad, because every wasted vegetable or food product raises demand and the demand then raises the price. People who let food waste all the time or don’t care about the money they spend and let food waste raise the prices for those who really cannot afford an increase in price in more than just our own country. It really makes me feel bad to feel as though I’m contributing to the negative end of the scale when ANYTHING spoils around here and … it does. Although I’m not talking about half a stick of butter and such.. but unopened items or something that is more than half wasted. πŸ˜› I don’t feel a bit of guilt when tossing a tablespoon of butter, a couple of bad eggs or pouring out the last cup of milk (although I’ve started making sugarfree pudding out of the last cups of milk the day it expires to avoid it going bad. πŸ˜‰ Another tip.

I have also started using canvas bags for groceries and would like to get some that are appropriate for carrying groceries made with a Shivae! on them at cost. πŸ™‚ IOW, whatever I pay for them plus shipping without me getting any profit (Or I round it up or something)
