    Vas!

It was a beautiful afternoon. The weather was pleasantly cool and relaxing. A gentle breeze was blowing in the smell of fall and the creatures of the forest were going about their usual business of the year. Eating.

A mixed herd of unicorns and horses grazed contently in the still lush fields that rimmed a series of deep gullies. It was a small herd of six mares, two colts and three fillies. Their stallion was a rangy looking buckskin with a black muzzle. He stood on the lookout, ears forward in attention and only occasionally dropping his head to crop grass.

“There’s the herd, Riva,..” An over exuberant voice whispered from one of the towering trees at the edge of the forest. A pair of Shivae chicks were perched up in the branches, as close to the herd as they could get. One of them was a bright flashing orange and crimson with a cream colored belly, black muzzle and paws. The other was a duller tan with the same markings. Brothers. They both had jet-black stripes crisscrossing their bodies. And now, their blue gray eyes were fixated on the herd.

They were hunting, even though they were really too young to hunt. They still had their baby fat and were a little clumsy, but they both also had wings and that helped them immensely in keeping out of harm’s way.

“Let’s go!” Vas clawed the bark urgently, tail twitching back and forth.

“They’re not afraid of us, Vas,…” Riva shook his head, settled onto the branch in observation. “How do we get them to run the way we want?”

Vas cocked his head sideways, peering up at the branches, now in deep thought. “Hmm,…” His brother had a point. The herd was not afraid of two Shivae chicks. They were small and none of them could hope to drag down or even injure a horse or unicorn, without being severely hurt in the process.

    Vas!

“How do puffers chase us off when we annoy them?” Vas twisted his body around and placed his fore claws on the tree trunk. Puffers. Very fun to play with because they were quick fuzzy little creatures that took awhile to stalk successfully or dig out of their burrows.

“They get bigger and make lots of noise,…” Riva flexed his wings, idly lifting a forepaw to scratch just below his short feathery crown. “Hurts my ears. But we can’t do that, Vas.”

“No,.. we can’t,…” Vas jumped and started to scramble up the tree trunk to the higher thinner branches. “At least, not like the puffers, but I have an idea! Come up here!”

“Last time I did that,…” Riva sighed, peering up uncertainly, “I had to sit in mud for a day to get buzzer thorns out of my skin!” That particular plan had gone badly. To get the sweet bark the buzzers made, Vas had suggested they get above the buzzers since buzzers always flew down and drop things on the bark until it fell down.

They quickly learned that buzzers could indeed fly up just as well as down.

    Vas!

The herd continued grazing, oblivious to the two scheming Shivae chicks, that is until the chicks wanted to be heard. They rustled the leaves and bit through the branches of several clumps of foliage, then leapt out of the tree, carrying the branches and rustling leaves in her fore claws. Then they screeched as loudly as they could, hoping that their strange appearance would throw the herd off.

Horses and unicorns scattered in a panic.

‘It’s working! They’re running!’ Vas thought proudly as he flew the branches around. Only his wings could be seen coming out of the foliage and the herd only saw a strange flying noisy thing that they’d never seen before. It was enough.

    Vas!

The only problem was, the stallion wasn’t fooled. With a ringing neigh, he charged down into the herd and bared his teeth at the first mare he reached, almost jerking her off the ground as he roughly grabbed her by the back of the neck to get her attention.

“Stop, you fools!” He let her go and kicked at another that was passing nearby. “You are running for no reason!! Just Shivae chicks! No threat! Now stop!” He grunted and with ears laid back saw that he’d gotten most of the mare’s attention.

“Guess it wasn’t that good of an idea.” Vas and Riva dropped the branches once they saw that the horses were not going where they wanted them to. Most of them had stopped running and were simply prancing around the field, snorting and noting the smell of Shivae on the air.

    Vas!

One of the horses in a wild gallop, came a little too close to the ravine and in trying to correct her direction, bumped into a smaller unicorn. The unicorn neighed and stumbled to the side while the larger mare bared her teeth and snapped at her in irritation, ears laid back.

“Watch where you’re going! Dumb beast,….” The mare snorted as the unicorn’s footing failed her and she went over the edge. The unicorn slid most of the way down on her hooves, trying hard to scramble back up, but she couldn’t get the right footing.

    Vas!

The gray and black unicorn rolled the last few feet, over larger sharp edged rocks at the base of the ravine, then ended up in a patch of soft grass. She laid on her side gasping for air, sharp pains racking her side with every breath and stinging sensations along her legs where they’d struck rocks. Nothing seemed broken, but she was having a hard time breathing.

The stallion, noticing what happened darted past the mare that had pushed the unicorn over the edge and bit her hard on the flank, getting a pair of agitated heels flying at him in response and a squeal. He snorted at the top of the ravine, arcing his neck to see if the unicorn was still alive.

It was one of the mutes, but this mare was still one of his and he would not lose a mare so easily. “Get up.” He neighed, stamping one foot on the ground. He knew she couldn’t fully understand him, but her own instincts to remain with the herd would be enough, especially if he kept neighing at her.

The unicorn painfully gathered her forelegs in front of her, muscles not wanting to respond and attempted to push herself up. She ended up coughing in pain, a few specks of blood spattering on the grass in front of her. Then with a quick movement, she was on her feet again, shaking, but on her feet.

Vas and Riva were unable to see what was going on and had missed the unicorn going over the ravine. They sighed and slunk around in the grass, watching the herd. “It almost worked,…” Riva stated encouragingly.

“Interesting.” Vas chirred, watching the gray and black unicorn struggle to get to the top of the ravine. It didn’t take her long, but she stumbled near the top and started to slide. The stallion was quick in gripping her neck in his teeth and hauling her the rest of the way out.

“Not even the sense of a just dropped filly!” The stallion snorted, getting the mare over the ledge enough for her to stand. “Get up!” He circled around behind her and nipped her flank to get her moving faster.

The two chicks watched, stealthily moving through the high grass. Riva lifted his head above the grass and peered at the stallion and mare. The stallion was moving with his head up, very aware of exactly where the chicks were. The unicorn on the other hand, was slowly trudging after him, her head held low.

“I think it did work,….” Riva trilled inquisitively. From here, he could smell blood and the fall had obviously weakened the unicorn. It came to him that their father had told them to look for the weak ones. They would prove less of a problem in a hunt.

This herd was strong, but now, there was one who had been made to limp and drag herself. This was fascinating to the chicks. They’d never hunted before, only seen hunts, successful ones that were over in minutes. They hadn’t had time to observe and see how their parents chose their prey or gained the experience to do it themselves.
